Lakit Lookout: 3.4 km Out and Back
363 M elevation gain
This hike was recommended to us by our younger sister. She used to call Cranbrook home. We also asked a waitress at the Heid Out about hikes in their area. She also mentioned Lakit Lookout. Both claimed the drive up is rough and tough, and the road is narrow, but the views of such a short hike were incredible. We thought the risk would be worth the reward, and boy, we were right. The drive up was quite interesting. You definitely need a high clearance vehicle. The road was very rough in areas with sharp shale rock. The bottom half of the road is wider, but it tends to get narrower, and narrower the further you drive up. At one point a lifted truck almost tipped over trying to let us go by! He ended up having to reverse, and go in the ditch to let us through. By the time we got close to the trailhead, we took advantage of a large corner and parked there. It was about a .5 km walk to the trailhead, and surprisingly the part of the road that we walked was not as treacherous. We definitely could have driven the rest of the way.

There was a pretty creek on the opposite side of the trailhead, and the little area around the trailhead was very scenic. There is also toilet facilities if you need to go to the washroom after the drive up lol. This hike is scenic the entire way up. It starts with a slow incline, and shortly becomes nothing but steep switchbacks. You definitely hike hard to gain 363 km in 1.7 kms. The one nice thing about this hike is that if you need to stop to take a breather, the views are spectacular all around you.

By the time you gain the elevation, and get to the top. The views are absolutely breathtaking. You are completely surrounded by mountains. The purcells on one side, and the epic rocky mountains on the other. You are literally in the middle of these two ranges, and the feeling you get when you reach the top is exhilarating. There is a neat little cabin at the top with a wood burning stove you can stay in overnight. There is also a picnic table you can sit have some snacks or a picnic at, and take in the surrounding beauty. A lot of people do this to catch the beautiful sunset, and the wonderful sunrise land on the surrounding peaks. We unfortunately didn't have the time to do this, but our younger sister has and the photos she has of it are spectacular. I have posted them below.

We would definitely do this hike again. It was beautiful views for such a short term hike. We highly recommend it. Directions can be found at the following---> Lakit Lookout .
