9KM
700 M Elevation Gain
Directions: Head up towards Whitewater ski resort. Go past the first lift on the way up to the resort, and there will be a small parking lot on the left hand side of the road. Park here. Walk to the very right of parking lot, and you will find a well tracked path to the Hummingbird Pass Backcountry Area. There will be a large map on the left side of this path and outhouse on the right. This is where adventures begin.
I have done a snowshoe up the majestic White Queen once already this year. It was my second snowshoe of the season, and super grueling for myself as I had a few beers the night before. That story is a whole different blog post. This time around the route was different, and a lot more exciting. I had seen pictures of the Hummingbird Pass, Evening Ridge, and Mount Beattie backcountry skiing area, but did not know you could access White Queen from this area. A lady from the Kootenay Mountaineering Club frequents this area so often, and posts wonderful photos on the clubs facebook page, so I sent her a message a few weeks ago hoping to get up there, and explore with someone familiar with the area. Her and I made a plan this weekend to head up to the Hummingbird Pass area, and pick our route depending on the weather. Saturday came and the avalanche risk report was considerable so she had mentioned doing White Queen. I thought maybe she meant the way I had went previously with a big group at the beginning of the season. When I asked her if she meant the Whitewater ski hill way up near silver king lift, she mentioned there was a far more beautiful route, and that it was like going up a completely different mountain. I was so excited! First to meet someone who takes beautiful photographs and knows the terrain of a lot of different areas in our kootenay region, and second to get back up White Queen but a very different scenic route! My 2 younger sisters tagged along as well. When I met Goody I knew right away that she was an amazing person. She had a sense of adventure about her that is so inspiring! She has a lot of years on me, but also way more energy. She was such a breath of fresh air. We also picked up her friend Alison. Alison was another wonderful lady, that has quite the interesting life, and has been to a lot of the places I have wanted to visit! Goody led my sisters , Alison and I up a neat skin trail that offered stunning views even on a moody day. The weather couldn't make up its mind on what it wanted to do. We started off with partial blue skies, and the higher we went the foggier it got until, we could barely see the trees in front of us. I loved hearing about all of Alison's adventures as she had bought a caravan last year and visited most of the National Parks I want to visit down in the United States. She had spent lots of time in Sedona, Utah, Arizona, and California. Goody was also telling us of her adventures hiking last year in one place that is at the top of my bucket list SWITZERLAND. Its like the universe put all of us together for a reason, and I am so grateful for meeting these 2 ladies, and that a couple of my sisters could meet them as well. Only one time of visiting and exploring with them, and I want to join them on more adventures! This 9 km snowshoe was so beautiful. The elevation was spread out nicely, and the skin trail had some nice switchbacks offering great views. The viewpoints even on a foggy day were pretty gorgeous. All the scenery was stunning, and Goody was definitely right about this way being a lot more fantastic then the way I had went previously. It was so refreshing to be able to do it from a different perspective. Ymir Peak was invisible on this day, but I didn't need views at the top as I had been to that part already! The route up was what was the best part for me. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a bit more of an adventurous snowshoe. I would also highly recommend checking out Busaba Thai Café for some Thai comfort food to warm you up after this adventure. Best Thai in the west koots. Or if Craft beer is your thing. Backroads Brewing Company is always the place to go apres adventure. Check out our photos below!
